How to Crop Images Online (and Pick the Right Aspect Ratio)

2026-06-12

Why crop at all?

Upload a photo as-is and the important part often gets hidden, or the platform auto-crops it in the wrong place. Cropping to the ratio you want beforehand keeps your intended composition everywhere you post it. This matters most where ratios are fixed — profile pictures, YouTube thumbnails, product images.

Recommended ratios by use

  • Profile / icon: 1:1 (square)
  • YouTube thumbnail: 16:9
  • Instagram feed: 1:1 or 4:5
  • Instagram Stories / Reels: 9:16
  • Blog hero image: 1.91:1 (landscape)

Watch the pixel dimensions

Checking the width and height shown as you drag helps avoid blur or forced cropping after upload. Cropping too small means it pixelates when enlarged, so crop slightly larger than where you'll use it.

Finishing up

The original is kept intact and only the cropped image is saved. If it's going on the web, run it through the image compressor afterward for faster loading. A square crop is also handy for making a site icon with the favicon generator.
